In situations where medication, therapy, and the combination of these treatments prove ineffective, or work too slowly to relieve severe symptoms, electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) may be considered.
Some people may also consider complementary or alternative treatments for depression. Complementary or alternative treatments may include:
- St. John's wort
- Omega-3 fatty acids
- Vitamin B6
- SAMe (S-adenosyl-L-methionine)
- 5-HTP (5-hydroxytryptophan)
(Click Natural Remedies for Depression or Acupuncture and Depression for more information on what research has shown regarding these alternative treatments.)
There are several alternatives to Zoloft, including other medications and therapy. Talk to your healthcare provider if Zoloft is not working for you, or if you are experiencing bothersome Zoloft side effects. You may need to try one of the other depression treatments.
