Venlafaxine XR is a medication that is prescribed for the treatment of depression, social phobia, panic disorder, and generalized anxiety disorder. The extended release drug is a type of serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor that works on two chemicals within the brain known as serotonin and norepinephrine. Venlafaxine XR comes in a capsule or tablet form that is usually taken once daily. A few of the conditions that you should let your healthcare provider know about before you take this medicine include glaucoma, liver disease (including liver failure or cirrhosis), and high blood pressure.

Venlafaxine XR comes in an extended release capsule, meaning the medicine is released slowly into your body. There is also a tablet form of venlafaxine XR, but it is not equivalent to Effexor XR.
